OFS logoThe Benchmark Optical Fibre Laboratory Systems - OFS Series I, II and III - are designed to provide an extremely comprehensive level of training, both to students as well as to all levels of scientific and technical personnel, in the concepts and application of fibre optics in digital communications and engineering. The OFS Series are designed and built to cover theoretical understanding as well as practical applicability.

Optical Fibre System

In short, the OFS Series ensures that its users will be well-equipped to work with large-scale, real-world fibre optic systems.

The various OFS Series, either singly or in combination, can be used for demonstration, training and experimentation. In addition, the Benchmark OFS Series lends itself to forming an ideal basis for advanced research projects and prototypes.

The OFS series span a wide area of fibre optics and related topics including:

The Benchmark OFS Series are comprehensive fibre optic laboratories designed to be fully functional from day one. They comprise of high-end 1300nm components and high-speed 1300nm single-mode links and all necessary fibre optic components to enable users to configure their own links.

The Benchmark OFS Series

As mentioned earlier, the Benchmark OFS Optical Fibre Laboratory Systems are a series of full-fledged fibre optics laboratory systems designed to guide users through all stages of fibre optic education and so lay the foundation that will enable them to work with large-scale, real-world systems. These systems are ideal for training students in engineering institutes and polytechnics as well as for use in research labs for development of prototypes for industrial and research applications.

The Benchmark OFS Series is available in three system configurations, each of which is configured with fully compatible Fiber Optic equipment and components to carry out a series of structured experiments.

The Benchmark Optical Fibre Lab System:

Series I

The OFS Series I teaches fibre optics and digital communication principles with the Benchmark Optical Fibre Trainer - OFT. It introduces standard lab equipment like Light Sources and Power Meters and gives a feel for work with glass fibre using Links. OFS Series I is well suited for small-budget entries into fibre optics. Students to get working right away with off-the-shelf equipment.

Series II

The OFS Series II provides initial training on the OFT, then introduces the user to full-fledged work in fibre optics ranging from glass fibre connection to the actual design of fibre optic links. The necessary components are provided to enable users to configure their own links. Specially designed re-usable, component-insertion PCBs allow students to construct links repeatedly without using up PCBs and components. Assembled samples are provided for reference and demonstration. Necessary fibre optic components are provided to enable the user to construct their own links. Series II provides adequate infrastructure for students to undertake projects in fibre optics.

Series III

OFS System 3 is the complete fibre optic laboratory environment for training in all aspects of fibre optic communications. This system gives more hands-on experience - from the component level to simple system design level. In addition to the complete functionality of the OFS Series I and II, Series III features experiments with 1300nm components and high-speed 1300nm single-mode link. It also introduces UV and mechanical splicing techniques used in fibre optics. The OFS Series III is ideally suited for development of prototypes for industrial and research applications.

OFS Manuals

All OFS systems come with comprehensive laboratory manuals, in addition to the manuals for the trainer and equipment, to guide users through a series of experiments.

Moreover, these manuals clearly explain a complete set of experiments that cover system level integration, link characteristics, LEDs and photo detector characteristics, link design, connection of optical fibre, splicing of optical fibre, mounting of LEDs and detectors in receptacles, etc.
